Dijana Bekvalac
My work explores the boundaries of abstraction
and focuses on the linguistic identity of the visual. I recycle the discarded
symbolic systems of modernism (i.e. The Grid) and give them new relevance in
the contemporary debate surrounding the hybridity of painting as a visual
system.
My own symbolic system is removed from the simple banality of signifier and
signified, and the spoken word; rather it grapples with the allusive, intuitive
side of Meaning. Working from this position allows the work to
develop as an independent visual system with its own laws, time and logic.
Time
exploration is an important aspect to my practice, working within
limitations of my medium I am employing temporal tools (sequencing of
image and breaking image structure) in order to insight the play of
real-linear time and circular-illusive time of work without
interrupting the process.
